=Sustainable Agricultural Intensification Research and Learning in Africa (SAIRLA) project in Ethiopia=

==Introduction==
[[media type="custom" key="29076175" align="right"]]Sustainable Agricultural Intensification Research and Learning in Africa (SAIRLA) is a five-year programme (2015 – 2020) that seeks to generate new evidence and design tools to enable governments, investors and other key actors to deliver more effective policies and investments in sustainable agricultural intensification (SAI) that strengthen the capacity of poorer farmers’, especially women and youth, to access and benefit from SAI. Funded by the UK Department of International Development (DFID), SAIRLA has commissioned research and will facilitate multi-scale learning to understand different ways of achieving SAI and its developmental implications.

==Why SAI matters==
To meet the global challenge of food security and in particular to support sub-Saharan Africa’s growing population with sufficient and nutritional food, agricultural production must increase. Different approaches and methods for increasing production also need to be assessed in terms of how far they can reduce environmental impacts, given the major environmental challenges for global agriculture, such as climate change,
conserving biodiversity etc. At the same time there are pressing social challenges which include the persistence of chronic poverty for many communities and rising inequality globally. Sustainable agricultural intensification (SAI) seeks to address these challenges by increasing agricultural productivity while maintaining or improving environmental and social sustainability. SAIRLA’s research projects will generate new evidence and decision-making support tools to help governments, policy-makers, investors and other key actors create an enabling environment for women and poorer smallholder farmers to engage in sustainable agricultural intensification. SAIRLA will facilitate the development of multi-stakeholder learning platforms – the SAIRLA Learning Alliance - in each of the target countries and between those countries and international stakeholders to co-generate, share and facilitate use of knowledge by decision makers.

==Social Learning==
Complex challenges such as developing equitable sustainable intensification in Africa need responses which take into account knowledge being incomplete, sources of uncertainty and also diverse values and interests. Multi-stakeholder, social learning processes can enable different perspectives to be shared and discussed, scenarios and options to be assessed, decisions taken, commitment and capacity to be built and actions implemented. SAIRLA will facilitate the development of a multistakeholder social learning platform called the SAIRLA Learning Alliance. National Learning Alliances are being developed by facilitation teams in Ethiopia, Tanzania, Ghana, Malawi, Mali and Zambia. An International Learning Alliance between the national alliances and international researchers and other stakeholders will be formed late 2016. These linked platforms aim to co-generate, share and facilitate use of knowledge between researchers and decision makers together with other stakeholders interested in enabling socially and environmentally sustainable agricultural intensification.

==SAIRLA National Learning Alliances(NLA)==
National learning Alliances (NLA) are being established in each of the target countries: Ethiopia, Tanzania, Ghana, Malawi, Mali and Zambia. The aim of each NLA is to co-generate, share and facilitate use of knowledge by SAIRLA research projects, decision makers (policy makers and investors) and other key stakeholders to develop equitable sustainable agricultural intensification in ways that enable women, youth and poorer smallholders to participate in and benefit from agricultural development. The NLA participants will engage in multi-stakeholder learning processes by which knowledge is generated, shared and used by SAIRLA research projects, decision makers and other key stakeholders.

This project aims to build an interdisciplinary research programme to increase the uptake of context-appropriate SAI innovations in East and southern Africa through evidence generation, data analytics and the development of innovative tools for stakeholder engagement with evidence.

The project aims to addresses the research question in relation to the key risk factors for smallholders in participating in sustainable agricultural intensification, and the risk management strategies (RMS) that can be put in place to manage them. Specifically, the project focuses on increasing smallholders’ access to inputs and participation in the development of commercial value chains.

This project aims to design and implement new digitally-supported information services that will support farmer decision-making in an intensification trajectory. The project will combine three approaches to achieve this. The first approach is “user-centred design“, this involves identifying how farmers currently use information. These insights will be used to develop new concepts and prototypes for information services, which will be trialed with farmers and other prospective users. Secondly, the project will make use of the “lean data” approach, an evaluative data collection approach that makes use of digital tools, this is highly goal-oriented and uses validated indicators. This will help to evaluate and compare farms and accelerate learning about how well they perform on different indicators that are important for SAI. A third approach is “crowdsourcing” or farmer citizen science, which will support a large group of farmers in experimenting with new agricultural options and creating new knowledge for sustainable agricultural intensification. The project will combine elements from these different approaches to create a digitally-supported agro-advisory service and to collect evidence on its effectiveness.

The International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) has been implementing several action research projects in Ethiopia over the last few years. These action research projects have been implementing development interventions along commodity value chains and systems in various parts of the country. Research protocols were superimposed on development interventions to assess their feasibility, effectiveness and development outcomes. In order to share its experiences in implementing action research projects, ILRI has now organized this workshop.

Objectives:

The objectives of the workshop and exhibition are: 
# To create wider awareness and knowledge about the technologies and approaches that are tested and validated by LIVES, N2Africa, Africa RISING, FtF Mali and AVCD Kenya projects
# To facilitate the uptake of successful experiences/innovations that combine productivity enhancement and market access
# To facilitate dialogue on improving the linkage/partnership between research and development actors and facilitate cross learning

Arusha workshop to work on the umbrella proposal and regional proposal.

Aberra and Melkamu attended thesis defence in Hawasssa
Epidemiology survey done in all sites
We organized nutrition training for Sinana and Basona groups.

===CIAT===
Since January we finished harvesting the trials in three sites. All data entered.
Discharge/refiltration measurements in one watershed mostly. Diver installed there.
Trying to analyse impact of certain interventions and collecting data for ?? and Debre Birhan.
Calibrating SWAT to analyse impact of our interventions implemented by communities. More or less all data collected. Tesfaye attended IWMI training.
Assisted to MSc students on irrigation and assessing intervention impact as perceived by communities. One PhD student trying to work on eco-efficiency in AR sites. These are major activities for us.

===ICARDA===
Complied the past season data and write-up in place and will submit to the coordination office.
We attended the Africa RISING project in Ethiopia Annual review and planning meeting in February.
We are now preparing ourselves for the upcoming IP meeting in Sinana.

===IWMI===
Two major activities: solar pumps are already installed and ??? is developed for data collection + someone developing a business model for delivery.
The second one is on mechanization-assisted water delivery... Irrigation activities are operating and data collection is completed and the person in charge of this is???

===CIP===
We don't have much update on seeds but we did seed distribution in Lemo but not in Tigray due to drought. Some data collection activities are still going on. We collected a potato planter to see how we can make use of it.

===ICRISAT===
Working with EIAR and ATA and possible to identify nutrient needs with specific landscape farming systems. We are proposing to continue this work with ?? We are now conducting 2-year results with

===CIMMYT===
Last week was our final week in the field. All data compiled and we have good results and I hope we could show how mechanization can drive innovation. Would be great to talk about that. If there was a 2nd season we would have better publishable results. The irrigation scheme with IWMI is exciting for places where there is no irrigation at all. We also launched an Africa RISING outgrowth project funded by GIZ. Next week we'll look at the potato planter to test if we can do this in Melkasa. Welcoming Walter to the project as he will play more of a role in this project.
The outgrowth of AR project by GIZ was supposed to be for 17 months. 

We participated at the EIAR anniversary and we contributed posters and a tractor from CIMMYT. There will be another demo next week and we will display some more next week.

==2. Update on the proposal / partnership document==
In Phase 2 there will still be very much research but we are going to do some of our current research as 'backstopping research'.
There's a lot of reflective discussions and the umbrella proposal is coming nicely.
Progress made in Arusha about:
* Targeting through research and development partnerships
* Our theory of change
* Research questions (work in progress)
* Good first draft of the Africa RISING Ethiopian Highlands proposal

Within the next two weeks, the regional proposal will be worked on (early next week). The umbrella proposal, next week, should be in a good stage of development for sharing. If you have strong views about the way we're heading, it'd be good to raise this. 

We want to spend a little bit of time today on the development partnerships. The majority of phase 2 will sink or swim on whether or not it is aligned with development partnerships. Does everyone understand clearly what we mean to do with Africa RISING?

All proposals that have been shared with us are on a good track.

Three essential requirements from USAID:
# Innovations to be scaled and that can attract development partners for investment
# Development partners with clear willingness
# Targets (value for money) in hundreds of thousands. The rule of thumb is USD 10-20 / farmer (as opposed to USD 5,000 / farmer for phase 1).

We will submit 3 to 5 examples of partnership agreements with the full proposal. Not all 11 proposals that are currently expected will be fully mature by the submission of the initial draft to Jerry Glover (final submission by the end of May). People can make a case for being more lenient on the above-mentioned rule of thumb for backstopping partnerships. And in addition there will also be generic research around the processes of sustainable intensification (e.g. systems analysis across sites and protocols).

Questions to Peter and Kindu:
* Q: We haven't mentioned budgets in the protocols - but we need to think about the amount of farmers we'll be able to reach. It influences the money we need per protocol. How do you see that?
* A: At the moment, these proposals will be presented as examples of 'where we can go'. We don't want to put dollars on them as we won't be starting this before October and until then you'll all be working on these proposals. We'll come to October to the point of having to implement this work. You'll have much more clearly defined targets etc. and that will give you a much better ballpark. If we get 10-11 credible partnerships we may have an issue about how much we can allocate to each of them. If you get the opportunity to leverage more research funds off another donor that's great and we can see how we can co-fund.
* Q: What indicators do you need from partners to show that they're ready to collaborate and implement?
* A: The real indicator is your confidence that they will work with you. I'm trusting you that these partners are ready to run. If not the money won't flow. MoUs will have to be in place by the time you start. If you can go to the USAID mission and get them to give you USD 2 Mio, Africa RISING will backstop that. As long as partners are working with Africa RISING technologies on their own or together we can backstop.
* Q: Can we submit woredas/kebeles outside of AR areas?
* A: Yes, it's about scaling so you can go anywhere but if you need site coordinators' support you need to consider the broader areas where we've been working.
* Q: Can we link with other ongoing projects?
* A: Yes, you can do anything. It's very open-ended.
* Q: Is this how the projects will be appraised? Households have a lot of investments along the chain that have an impact on the household.
* A: I appreciate that there are many beneficiaries and non-beneficiaries and I'd be interested to see what the review says about this. We will have to show evidence of 'contribution', not 'attribution'.
* Q: There are several ways of putting together the targets e.g. primary beneficiaries and secondary beneficiaries etc.
* A: Yes but at any rate you need to have a consideration about the three types of targets on the phase 2 proposal diagram (the different dotted lines)
* Q: The rule of thumb was to work with at least 2 CG partners - is there any limit right now? Will you accept proposals from single institutions?
* A: Yes, I will accept that as it's difficult enough to get these development partners etc. In the first phase we were trying to glue people/institutions together. Some of these partnerships have cemented, others not so much but there's no prescription about this. No penalisation if there's a strong proposal with a strong development partnership but only one CGIAR centre. If we only submitting single centre initiatives I would regard that as a bit of a failure.
* Q: How do you partner with institutions that are interested in serious money. What kind of messages are we giving such partners?
* A: That they won't get money from us. The buy-in is based on them thinking that the ideas can really contribute to their programs. The MoA institutions in woredas, zones etc. will be our main partners.

The final IP meeting has been tentatively planned for the end of May. The meetings will focus on sharing results by farmers for specific sites. Evaluators have been praising IPs and seeing that technologies are taken to scale with the own budget of local organisations etc. For this final IP meeting we are looking for the results.
Data has to be collected by then. Without protocol owners/researchers we can't really organize these.
First week of June is good.
Communication materials can be shared in different ways (briefs, posters etc.) to contextualize them to some needs.

If we organise ourselves to avoid partner fatigue it would be great.

=Background=
Africa RISING is now more than half way through its first phase of the project life time . The first phase will come to an end in September 2016. since the start of the full
research implementation in 2012 a lot of publication has been produced by the team. In addition, a lot of data were captured during the implementation period .
The Africa RISING team in Ethiopia has come to the understanding that the project has a lot to offer in terms of scientific publications which has not been done so far .
Thus, it has been agreed to organize a writeshop where by the research team sit together for four days to focus and write scientific papers including journal articles and
evidence briefs.

This is the first writeshop that Africa RISING project in Ethiopia is organizing . It aims at :

=Day one - Tuesday=
The writshop started with a brief introductory remark by Kindu Mekonnen. He highlighted how important this writshop is to Africa RISING project in Ethiopia particularly in relation to the external evaluation which will be done in mid September . Kindu then invited Siboniso Moyo, DDG of ILRI In Ethiopia to do a welcoming remark . In her remarks she highlight that Africa RISING is ending by September 2016 and a lot of datas have been collected and we need to make sure that are captured and put into products . so this wirtshop is expected to help people to work on those products . she also stressed that such kinds of events needs people's commitment and urge participants to stay on board until the end of the writshop. finally she wishes everyone a very fruitful deliberation and promised to come back at the end of the writeshop to see the progress made.

Following the welcoming remarks Simret Yasabu lead an interactive session to help participants know who is in the room and later broke participants in to groups to list down their expectation in the four days . The groups were formed under four topics . The first group is those who have experience in writeshop and have experience in writing journal articles / evidence briefs . the second group is those who have no experience in writeshop and who have no experience in writing journal articles/ evidence briefs. the third group is those who have no experience in writshop but who have written journal articles/evidence briefs . the fourth one is those who have experience in writeshop but no experience in writing journal articles /evidence briefs .

The second day focused more of writing . Participants continued working on there outputs . Before the morning tea and coffee break lead authors shared
 where they are with regard to the status of their outputs in terms of percentage and the status they expect their products will be by the end of Friday. 
After the coffee and tea break Dr Tilahun Amede gave a short presentation on how to write a readable papers .

=Day Three - Thursday=
The third day was mainly a writing day with the expectation of the last hour of the day where people shared the status of the output they are working on. Most of the evidence briefs reached 90% and believed to be finalized on the last day . We have found two Journal articles almost finished and some more to be in a good draft form by the end of the writeshop. Siboniso Moyo also came and gave a brief words appreciating the efforts being made by the team as well as the progress she head on the outputs . The day ended with a reception .
=Day Four - Friday=
The whole morning of the the fourth day which is the last day of the writeshop focused on writing ,polishing and editing . After lunch time Peter Ballantyne facilitated a session on what other outputs we can produce in the six FtF indicators

A team is also formed to have some discussions about the special issues, the scope .Tilahun,Kindu ,Leulseged

=Evaluation of the writeshop=
Before the closure of the writeshop Simret Yasabu Facilitates a short session to do a kind of evaluation about the writeshop. this was done in two ways . the first one was participants were asked to look back at the first day of the writeshop and see if their expectation which they mentioned in groups were met . they were asked to make a start on those which they believed were met . After that there was a short plenary where by participants were asked to give their views on what went well, what should have been done and what should be considered . the points are summarized:

* it was great for lead authors to frame their outputs
* it strength collaboration
* good opportunity for the academia to get focus on writing

* it may be good to have one umbrella as a frame where different outputs fit in . For example to have Sustainable intensification as an umbrella and asking people to write under this

=Closing remarks=
Kindu Mekonnen then gave a brief concluding remark . He appreciated the team interest and dedication of their time to sit and write. These outputs will be a great outputs to share for the external evaluation team . He Thanked Peter Ballantyne for the great facilitation and also helping the team to shape up the process . He also thanked Simret Yasabu for her unreserved effort to make this happen and finally every one for being part of the writeshop .

There is a gender analysis for the protocol highlighting challenges.

Nothing specific to report. We were organizing work around the IP recommendations etc. and following up on the issues raised. I learned, from the report, that these platforms started to challenge us. If you send the wrong people there you get more challenged. We need to send the right representatives.

===Other centres===
Zelalem has done work on 2 sites around nutrition surveys to collect qual & quant information. Also been IP meetings and most of you have participated in these meetings. It has been very good to have your presence. We have tried to identify criteria per protocol, IP members use these criteria to select the 'right farmers' so we can expect a much better research process and fit. In Sinana Elias will be organising the next IP meeting and we hope to see you all contribute.

==2. Update on the PCT Meeting in Washington==

This will focus on creating lots of outputs (evidence-based narratives, stories, briefs, reflections and guidance on typologies and IPs, phase 2 proposal etc.). 5 scientists will be identified per project to attend, in line with the research themes that we need to develop outputs around.
2 postdocs will be working on developing a sustainable intensification assessment framework. 
External review planned for September 2015.
Program theory of change - SI indicator framework and cross-cutting. This needs to be in place by end of August.
Phase 2 vision of success and design (program's systems approach, scaling approach, theory of change, hypotheses, zone of influence targets etc.)

Lots of momentum for phase 2 within USAID. 2 issues might stand in our way: a) US elections and b) changes within CGIAR and refocusing of CRPs which moves away from systems CRPs - this might be seen as a failure of the systems approach.

* Q: Have you discussed institutional arrangements across the regions to create more added value at program level?
* A: It would be nice to work together more across regions. We would like not so much a program manager but a program supervision entity. But we haven't finalized this conversation.
* Comment: A key issue is that the donor wants 'scale = impact'. That is a guiding principle. We have to develop a theory of change integrating different components across e.g. value chains.
* C: Typologies. I've seen many attempts at surveys etc. but in the Ethiopian project context, one typology we could keep in mind is what GoE uses for GTP2. It has farmers improving nutrition...
* C: People in the field are talking about scaling up and how much AR is going to support this. In Sinana more than 30 farmers are organizing themselves with potato seed thanks to the work we have done in the past. If we are not behind this kind of demands we can't achieve scaling up. Talking to AGP folks, the issue remains to have access to seeds.
* Q: External evaluators - can they come in late September (good timing for the season) and we could align this with a big farmers' day.
* A: They have their own schedule, we can't lead them. We'll allocate people at the sites for communication purposes. They will have to interact with us and to some extent they will choose their own itinerary, logistics etc.
* Q: About sustainability indicators. We discussed that in Arusha - have you used any of this? How did you present this and did you use our learning etc.? What do you expect postdocs to do and where will they begin?
* A: We had various meetings about this issue including the San Jose gathering with sustainability and intensification experts but we agreed that we've done a lot of talking about this and now is the time to do it. We suggest having 5-6 people to spend 2-3 days on this. Vara from the SI innovation lab is ready to fund these 2 postdocs to take all that thinking together in a usable/testable framework. One of them is from MSU working with Sieg Snapp, the other one is Mark Masumba from Columbia Uni. Our role in this is to help them test the framework so we can apply that framework.
''' 15 years ago Tilahun was struggling to develop a set of SI indicators, asked Gomez to help him develop these indicators. He told him: I can help you develop sustainability indicators if you tell me what sustainability means. What does it mean for us? Do we need different indicators for different systems? These are the issues we need to sort out.
''' We have made some progress on the dimensions / components of sustainability. We are working towards an indicator framework using 20-30 indicators that are generically applicable, not all in every system. But the key is that it's multi-dimensional (environmental, social, in terms of productivity, financial income and another one etc.). It's also meant to be relevant at plot/ farm/ community etc. scale.

==3. Feedback on the writeshop plans==
We sent a survey monkey to check possible timings, titles, storylines etc. and it turns out some topics overlap. We want this writeshop to bring teams together not just individuals.

* C: This is a writeshop aimed at people who already have a draft, it's not a training. You really have to make sure data is up to standard. The more attention to getting the facts right the more chances you have to reach a final draft. We may think of training people from the field in writing blog posts, which are good for internal comm.
* We discussed the idea of a blog training but we decided to do this aside from the writeshop.

==4. Selection of MSc, PhD applicants==
18 applicants: 7 PhD, 11 MSc. No gender balance (all males). More than 55% of applicants would like to conduct their research outside of AR sites. More than 66% are from AR partner institutions. Enrolled mainly in 6 local universities.
Are the research topics priorities and in line with AR thematic areas?
Each applicant should communicate with the CG partners.

How are we going to balance this? Some of these are so not in line with AR that they are not appropriate for funding. Some could be relevant though they're not in AR sites. Some have been developed with good inputs from the AR team and these are likely to be well aligned. How to move on?

Is it ok to have a filtered list and share that shortlist with all of you?

* Comment: Some of the sites are very close to where we are (e.g. Holleta etc.) so we can reorient the students so they can include one of our sites. We can also go back to their advisors to see if they really have to work in the other sites. If we believe in the quality of the people, it's probably not so difficult to reorganize the sites they're working on.
We need some people to review the applications. And to make sure the right people review the right applications.
Perhaps we can have partner institutes to help source female applicants too? We can ask a list of female students and encourage them to enroll them.
We have to broaden the institutions not just the AR partners but also looking more broadly for quality students.
Can we sponsor women bachelor students?
Advertisement was quite limited and we prioritized our partners. Now we don't have any female candidates so we can look more broadly.

==AOB (PMMT, CRA training and others)==
PMMT training planned. 10-15 people invited to take part. But the PMMT has not been updated.
For LIVES we have a GIS person. This is done by IFPRI in Africa RISING. A lot of this is supply-driven and this is still evolving.

CRA training: We're moving forward with those and some are in draft and all are basically ready to share. Wubalem suggested we cast extensions of our current CRAs - using carry-over. For some of you this may make the process a little less onerous.

* The percentage of female headed households presented does not help us know what percentage is good. We need to know the proportions of FHH households in each community and compare the proportions in relation to the total number.
* We need to prioritize activities that are done by women and those done by men and target the two groups based on what they do. We need to introduce interventions that align with these activities. Some of the activities in crop and livestock production are mostly done by women. But when it comes to training, it’s the men who come. So women who carry out the activities are not trained, which affects the output.
* When enterprises dominated by women started taking off, the men take over. This is a common problem in Ethiopia. What can we do to overcome this?
* We tend to focus of production but nutrition is not all about the amount consumed by the variety of foods consumed. When farmers diversify crops produced, it becomes more for sale and child children are still malnourished.
* We need to make it clear to people that if you do not involve women in decision making on what to grow and consume, then under nutrition will be an issue.
* There is need to characterize the cropping systems and the roles that men and women do in this systems. In Enset production, planning is done by men and processing by women. But there are no processing technologies yet its labor intensive.
* Some crops are dominated by women e.g. home gardens are controlled by women.
* Our approach does not seem to address the entire value chain including markets and consumption. We are focusing on production. If we fail to address consumption, then we shall not address nutrition.
* Nutrition is not easy to achieve because it entails changing people’s feeding behavior and cultures. In Ethiopia, people predominantly consume cereals and less of the vegetables. Changing this behavior is not easy.

We have to quantify tree-crop-livestock integration to measure GHG emissions. Use brickets with different sources. Efficient charcoal production; sustainable and participatory forest management...
Comment: for all integration approaches, this country is suffering from very limited biomass. We should take seriously the limits of biomass.

===Small scale processing===
It happens at farm level or at the immediate higher scale, for better income, minimizing post-harvest losses, nutrition, reduced labour and increased shelf life. Of all commodities in AR, which options could be applicable for this? Potatoes, dairy (cooling tech, churning butter), legumes (storage and transformation)... With both cereals and legumes the milling process absorbs a lot of ??? We could look at that as sources for feeds. Boiling, roasting kolo, enset processing, fruit juices, ripening houses for bananas, drying / processing of tomatoes, fodder chopping... Mix all this into baby food.
Comments: Increasing shelf life of potatoes would be good.

===Appropriate mechanization===
Around tillage and CA and more and more promotion of raw planting... Increasing labour and labour intensive work. Some attempts to do animal-drawn seeding and fertilizing. Small tractors are being demonstrated by smallholder farmers. We discussed options with cooperatives but there are issues with demand/timeliness (seasonal demands). There is potential for soil conservation and also for mechanized threshing (minimal tillage, increased labour efficiency and still higher yields and better soil conservation)... With threshing there's potential in harvesting the traditional way and/or threshing with a mechanized thresher.
Comment: but we need to think about how these technologies have been introduced and about dedicated input supplier (sometimes the scale is too small for these services). We have to show that we can do other things than just ploughing (for which the horsepower is limited).

===Post-harvest issues===
We suggest having a good quantification (how much is in the pre- and post-harvest losses). Students for post-harvest of potatoes (details - Jogo). For drying, storage, processing, we also need to quantify this. There were some examples for the post-harvest losses during threshing (15% quality loss) - quality and quantity loss. Mechanical threshing during harvesting of potato tubers. We can review what has been done by Melkasa and Bahir Dar, and other mechanization offices.
Potential partners that can work on this: Mekelle University, ARARI (mechanization), Melkasa research center (EIAR) and mechanization centers in the regions.

Post-harvest interventions to increase income of farmers. Small scale processing. Post-harvest interventions should be based on cropping systems. Enset was mentioned as a special crop for post-harvest processing too. Emphasis on enset should be on increasing the nutritional value (unique coop that requires special emphasis). Trade-offs between processing and nutritional value.

Demonstration of faba beans, potatoes and wheat. Based on those results we worked on seed multiplication of potatoes, wheat and faba beans.
Many activities such as PVT (5 types of crops), seed multiplication, trial on faba beans / potatoes and wheat. We're trying to add forage and tree lucerne, irrigated fodder.
We had a yield gap protocol by ICRISAT-CIAT including on socio-economic factors.
We started crop residue management recently.
At site level we've constructed ??
We are doing many activities on data collection, gender-related information. We did field days and did some evaluation on all protocols.
All kebele and woreda level IP meetings happened and we collected data for each protocol. Now trying to collect data on barley and potato. Many data collected by IFPRI, on crop residue management... survey activities etc.

We had many challenges: Stakeholder participation (AR doesn't have full time staff at site level)... Stakeholders are busy.
There are too many protocols for me to manage - especially for crops e.g. faba beans.
Low commitment of stakeholders. Some partners are actively participating but others not.
Managing and integrating different partners to come together etc. is very difficult. This is a challenge.
There is a problem of open grazing. Double-cropping might be a better solution. Free grazing is a challenge for fruit protocols.
Market access for some products (e.g. potatoes) is a problem. There's high demand for potato seeds though.
Integration of women/men in households was an issue.
Farmers have small sized land and they are complaining about providing their land.
Farmers and stakeholders' expectations are difficult to manage.
Irrigated land is limited...

Partnerships and scaling up opportunities?
Establishment of seedling. Wheat, potato, faba bean... 3 farmers / kebele this year. At zonal, woreda level, field visits and other activities will help us to further scale up/transfer knowledge. Undertaking field days. Many farmers are interested in working with us and that can be considered as an opportunity.
Existence of IPs will help us scale up our technology.

Major accomplishments: diagnostics, 10 protocols implemented and 160 farmers have participated in these. Evaluations have been conducted on various crops (PVS), IPs have been set up; data collected.

Challenges: Faba bean disease, wheat rust at late ripening stage; free grazing challenge; Research sites were dispersed and difficult for regular monitoring. Budget management unclear e.g. site coordinators have to cover full costs? What do site coordinators do for each protocol?
Options: Training, using ???, site selection to be done in clusters or properly managed but without ignoring distant village.

Partnership opportunities and partnerships: Crop varieties identified. We need to scale out barley etc. Scale up chick pea and fodder beet, forage mixture; proper in-feeding.
* The concern re: faba bean disease - it seems we don't have short term solutions. In one of our sites we try to introduce early maturing chick pea varieties with high yield (3 tons) and that could be an option to replace their faba bean concern. Good to hear that there are alternatives.

Achievements: Very strong partnerships; diversified technologies; forest multi-purpose trees. This year we identified actors, mapped value chain problems viz different actors. Adoption of technology successful as farmers want to get involved in activities. Participatory research methodology reached more farmers (193). We did demonstration activities and our participatory research. Planned activities were implemented. Short term training organized for actors involved. We learned from each other and it encourages us for further work. 

Challenges: Mono-cropping is prevalent. Farmers don't want to be involved in labour-intensive activities. They want new e.g. wheat varieties so we have to convince them of introducing diversified crops etc. Prevalence of pests (wheat rust). Activities overload the site coordinators. No protocol implemented. Absence of replication for PVS. 

Key issues: Protection of legumes with cereals is still a key issue; building cropping strategies to address marketing issues. Market information delivery.

Responsibility of each institute is mentioned.

Challenges: Workload of experts and researchers working with us - they have their own regular program and are engaged in AR activities also. Responsibility of partners is not clearly mentioned in the project proposals. Protocol on ?? is not clear. Cash flow, expectations etc. from farmers, government staff etc. are very high and we have limited resources (in some cases).

Partnership and scaling opportunities: We are lucky as almost all institutions are actively participating in our activities. 2 research centres. Farmers are eager to participate in research activities. High demand for high value perennial crops like avocados. Agroecology is diverse (tropical and highland fruits). Scaling up is key. Innovation platforms should take us central stage in the process of prioritizing.
We need to have an understanding of the distinction between semi-commercial and commercially oriented farmers - which ones are we focusing on? Producers of fruits, vegetables, small ruminants etc. are targeting markets. But those working with wheat, potatoes, may have a substantive proportion eaten at home. The decision can be guided by the framework of the platforms.
In case of new enterprises (e.g. wheat, potatoes, dairy, small ruminants etc.) we shall need some additional value chain assessments.
Support and input services to support the value chain: This includes seeds, chopping, spraying, mechanization etc. which can all be run as businesses. What is the viability of these enterprises and how can they sustainably support the VC?
Estimating the consumer demand: we need to estimate and project the demand associated to the scaled out enterprises. What is the market size? Which consumers will drive this? What variance in the mainstream products? Are consumers willing to pay for upcoming (scaled up) products --> we should do consumer studies/surveys.
Integration of protocols. At production level, unclear which enterprises will be scaled out but we'll need that integration for market and value chains + look at other components such as nutrition and gender. We may reduce the protocols to three.
If we are promoting the packages, we need to be able to allow farmers to select subsets of technology packages so that measuring the success looks at specific technologies.

* Conduct a gender analysis to understand gender roles in the communities
* Look at this data, realize inequalities and identify activities to reduce these gaps. Who does what, when, with whom, how long does it take etc.

DA and expert will be trained on the grafting and nursery and orchard management so that they render technical support for the farmers. In addition, strengthening the existing nursery that run by Wachemo university will be done in order to multiply the seedlings so that farmers will get access for the seedlings. Linkage also will be made with Butajira government nursery for experts and skilling sharing The project will support through providing * Training- grafting, management * Grafting Materials * Seedling to create mother trees for grafting scion

The project will provide training on the effective water utilization and conduct experience sharing visit for the farmers and experts to motivate the farmers and give learning opportunity.
