MEETING NOTES
Openings remarks by Dr. Ramadjita Tabo – ICRISAT Regional Director for West and Central Africa
Dear participants from Ghana, Nigeria, Rwanda, Italy, Burkina Faso, and Mali, Welcome to Bamako. I hope those of you coming from outside Bamako had a nice trip. We are delighted to have you here to participate in and share your work in the Africa RISING West Africa Legacy Workshop hosted by ICRISAT on behalf of the West Africa program. The importance of the Legacy workshop lies in identifying the achieved products of Africa RISING phase I program and what lessons we are taking forward to the second phase. During the legacy workshop, Theme Leaders will provide guidance on the preparation of the workshop proceedings and publications in peer reviewed journals. The research-for-development (R4D) activities conducted under Phase 1 of the Africa RISING project in West Africa from 2012 to 2016 were implemented under 10 Work-packages (2013-2015) and five Research Themes (2014-2016) by multi-disciplinary teams of research and development partners. The Results of the R4D activities have been documented mostly in project reports and conference proceedings, with few publications in peer-reviewed, impact-factored journals. Therefore, the objectives of the two days legacy workshop are to:
- Review achievements and lessons learnt from Phase 1
- Document project output in the form of scientific and non-scientific publications and,
- Present and review draft papers for publication in peer reviewed journals.
I am grateful you have come to share your knowledge today and tomorrow with colleagues. I am confident that we will all benefit from these presentations and the subsequent discussions and workings groups sessions. During these two days we will listen to many examples of what was done and what lessons we learned. We will also identify activities to proceed with during the second phase, which will start in March 2017. I would like to take his opportunity to thank USAID and IITA for making resources available for this work and for providing scientific guidance. I wish you a successful meeting, and look forward to hearing about the outcomes of the workshop. Thank you!
